I’ve been asked many times what someone should look for when trying to find a good artist. The best way you can do this is to look at their portfolio, whether it’s in a book at their shop or online. If they don’t have good work in their portfolio, they’re probably not good artists.
The shop may be clean, the people there might be nice, and the design they draw up for you might be exactly what you want, but if your artist doesn’t stand up to the points listed above, then you’re going to get a bad tattoo.
It’s okay to walk into a shop, talk with an artist for a while, and decide you don’t want a tattoo from them. Even if the artist has a bad attitude about it or tries to convince you to just let them do it, remember this is going to be on your body for the rest of your life.
This is fucking fantastic thank you!!
So important. I had an apprentice tattoo me once without any supervision - wound up with a blurry tattoo, and a messed up tendon for a while after >:(
I got my first two tattoos with an award winning artist and though he was pricier than others in the area, I’m so so glad I chose him. My tattoos look amazing and I have no doubt they’ll look great for decades to come. (And i have a compromised immune system, and he still did a great job!)

Straight guy: *is nice to me*
Me: He is gay and wants to experiment with me. He needs me to help him come out to his friends and family and embrace who he really is. I don’t know how or why he picked me, but it is my duty to help him and welcome him into the LGBT community.
Young gay culture at its finest lol
“What are you drinking? Vodka! Is it straight? No, gay. Perfect, Happy Pride!”
just wanna say that rates of alcoholism in lgbt persons are 3x that of the cishet population, as well as having higher rates of substance abuse, lower levels of abstinence from alcohol and drug use, and a greater likelihood to continue heavy drinking for a longer period of time. they are more prone to it due to higher rates of depression, a need to “fit into” the established safe haven of the bar scene, general homophobia/transphobia, etc.
when seeking treatment, nearly 71 percent of facilities said they have no specialized LGBT programs, 9 percent reported that while they previously had such services, they no longer exist, and only seven percent noted specialized LGBT programs. there is also the common risk of being turned away or being discouraged from from treatment on grounds of homophobia/transphobia.
alcohol companies, including absolut, are aware of these facts and make targeted marketing efforts to exploit the connection many gay and transgender people have to bars and clubs as safe spaces for socializing and increase easy access to alcohol.
while this isn’t to say that drinking is an unacceptable thing to do in moderation or to completely negate the historical importance of the lgbt bar scene, it IS to say that these companies do not give a FUCK about our community. they are targeting a dependable audience at the risk of numerous lives and should not be celebrated for doing so.
